Olivier Nsengimana, a passionate young veterinarian, founded the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA). This organization focuses on the Grey Crowned Cranes and other threatened species in Rwanda. The population of Grey Crowned Cranes has reduced by 80% over the last 5 decades. One of the threats for these magnificent birds is poaching for the pet trade. Olivier and his team have worked hard to register all captive cranes in Rwanda and reintroduce them to the wild, at the same time as putting efforts into stopping the illegal trade at the source. In 2019 RWCA identified 374 cases of illegal activities and 184 of these cases were successfully followed up by the local leaders.
